There are a lot of articles out there with a variety of health advice. Some can be extremely niche, too. But most health experts agree that even just the basics will put you on the right track to a healthy lifestyle. These beneficial habits can help you live longer and also increase your present capabilities and happiness levels.
So, what are some of these basic principles, and how can you get started today?
1. Eat A Healthy Diet
Eating healthily doesn’t necessarily mean that you must be on a super strict diet. Rather, you want a meal plan that’s sustainable. So, your routine could include actions like not overeating, maintaining a balanced diet, limiting foods that are not beneficial, stocking healthy snacks, etc. And remember, it will get easier and easier to eat healthy foods the more you do it.
2. Drink More Water
It’s REALLY hard to intake too much water, and we as humans usually need to drink a lot more than we do. Water maintains homeostasis, removes toxins, can stimulate your digestive system, can help you control your hunger, and more. Start with 8 cups of water a day and increase this number over time. Checking off your goal each day can also be a way to keep you going with this habit.
3. Sleep Well
The demands that a busy and stressful life brings often mean we don’t get enough ZZZs. But sleep should truly be one of the last things that gets compromised because it’s so important when striving to live healthily. And it’s not just something children need; adults require ample sleep as well. Try to stick to your sleep schedule, and extend your hours if your body isn’t shutting down long enough.
4. Exercise Regularly
Movement is key to a healthy lifestyle. It can be as little as going on a 15-minute walk every day or as much as weightlifting for an hour or two. There are also plenty of tips out there to help make your workout a part of your routine, too. For instance, you could get a group of friends together and keep one another accountable, do exercises that you enjoy (maybe that means doing a dance class or boxing class), go to instructor-led classes, etc. Find what works for you!
5. Do Post-Workout Recovery Activities
Guess what two of the best things to do for muscle recovery are? That’s right, drinking more water and getting more sleep! Some other ways to take care of your body post-exercising are stretching, getting a massage, enjoying a sauna, taking an ice bath, etc. All of these things can help your body not only stay in shape but also reduce the possibility of getting hurt during your next workout or as you go about your day.
6. Manage Stress
People can reduce stress in a lot of different ways. For some, listening to music or reading a book is helpful. For others, getting their nails done or getting a massage is relaxing. Meditation and stretching can also go a long way. Be sure to spend some time with your friends and family too (as long as they aren’t part of the stress!), which will help you stay connected and combat isolation.
7. Eliminate Harmful Habits
Things like smoking, using tobacco and drinking too much alcohol, among other things, can be detrimental to your health. It’s crucial to stop these habits now before they wear down your body. And it’s always a good idea to ask for help when you decide to quit these types of negative activities.
8. Check In With Your Doctor
Don’t forget to get a yearly checkup for a routine examination, to ask your doctor about any health questions you might have and to get any necessary tests done. Consider calling your doctor/medical professional if you have any concerns throughout the year as well.
Yes, it takes a lot of self-care and self-discipline to live a healthy lifestyle, but it’s worth it! You only get one body, and when it’s energized and capable, you might be surprised by how much it can accomplish.
