Do you ever notice jaw pain when you chew, talk, or even yawn? Maybe you hear a clicking sound or feel tightness spreading into your temples, neck, or shoulders. These are common signs of TMJ dysfunction—short for temporomandibular joint disorder—and massage therapy can be an effective, natural way to find relief.

Your temporomandibular joint connects your jawbone to your skull and is one of the most used joints in your body. Overuse, teeth grinding (bruxism), stress, poor posture, or even an injury can cause the surrounding muscles to become tight and inflamed. This can lead to:

Jaw pain or tenderness Headaches or migraines Ear discomfort or ringing Difficulty opening or closing the mouth Pain radiating through the face, neck, and shoulders

When these muscles stay tense, they restrict movement and make even simple daily actions uncomfortable.

Massage therapy targets both the muscles of the jaw and the surrounding support system—the neck, shoulders, and upper back—to restore balance and release deep tension. Here’s how it helps:

By working on the masseter, temporalis, and pterygoid muscles (the main chewing muscles), a skilled therapist can help ease the tightness that contributes to jaw pain and restricted movement.

Massage increases blood flow to the area, helping reduce inflammation, flush out metabolic waste, and deliver oxygen and nutrients that promote healing.

Stress is one of the most common causes of TMJ issues. Massage encourages relaxation of the whole body, which can reduce subconscious clenching or grinding during the day or while sleeping.

By relaxing the surrounding muscles, the jaw joint can move more freely and naturally—reducing clicking, popping, and uneven wear on the joint.

Because TMJ tension often extends beyond the jaw, your therapist will likely include work on the neck and shoulders. This helps correct postural imbalances and decreases referred pain patterns.

At MaM Massage & Spa, your therapist _. Sessions are customized to target tension points gently but effectively. Many clients report noticeable improvement in jaw mobility and pain after just a few sessions.

Apply a warm compress to the jaw and neck Practice slow jaw stretches and gentle side-to-side movements Avoid chewing gum or hard foods Be mindful of jaw clenching throughout the day Maintain good posture while sitting or working

TMJ pain can be frustrating, but it doesn’t have to take over your life. Massage therapy offers a holistic, non-invasive way to relieve pain, improve function, and restore balance to your body.
