Happy National Women’s History Month! In light of this celebration of women all over the world, we decided to sit down with our owner, Margarita Jiang, to learn more about her: why she started MaM Massage & Spa, what she’s passionate about and her fingerprint in the community.

Why did you become a massage therapist?

In 2015, I was working three jobs plus taking English classes. After six months, I was sore everywhere and didn’t have any energy. I went to see a doctor. They gave me pain relief medication and told me to rest. That didn’t help much, so I went to get a massage. I felt a lot better after the first session. The massage therapist told me to come back for a couple more and do stretches at home. I did what he asked. After a few sessions, I felt much better, which made me realize that massage can really help people alleviate their pain. So, not too long after that, I moved from New York to Los Angeles. I stayed there for a year and received 750 hours of training and passed the exam to get my massage therapist license.

What makes you stand out from other massage therapists?

Since I had that terrible physical experience, I chose to learn more about chronic pains when I was in massage therapy school. Now I specialize in chronic pain because I want to help people not only feel better but thrive.

What was it like starting your own company?

It was hard. Initially, you have expectations of how much you want to make in order to cover your business and personal expenses. I had a budget for my company but didn’t have enough customers, so I began to pay for marketing. The marketing costs were high, and I still wasn’t getting enough clients, so I shifted from online marketing to meeting people in person, which turned things around. Now, after a lot of learned lessons, I’m able to balance my revenue and cover my business and personal expenses.

What advice would you give to women looking to start their own companies?

First, watch your expenses. Spend the least amount of money that you can. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself in trouble. My second suggestion is to not lean on your cash flow. Make sure to have a cash reserve. It’s very important because you never know what could happen.

How do you support other women entrepreneurs?

I actually help an OKC entrepreneur group host a Women’s Business and Self-Improvement meetup every second Thursday of the month. The goal is to help women who have entrepreneurial dreams. In order to be a good business owner, you have to have a really good personal routine, so you have to put self-development first and then you can support your business. At the meetings, we want ladies to build relationships to help each other grow on the personal side and in turn grow and promote their businesses to support their families and friendships.

What are your future goals for MaM Massage & Spa?

I would like to expand. I want to be able to host my meetings at my business so that I can get more people involved. I also want to offer yoga classes to help people incorporate more stretching and have a greater self-awareness of self-care. Most importantly, I want to have more time to spend with my family and will continue helping other people, especially women, make their dreams a reality.
